Making the Most Out of Your Closet Space

If you ask families all over Washington what they would like in their dream house, from Bellevue to Tacoma and beyond, most would say (after the gourmet kitchen and the fantasy bath): more storage! Less clutter means more peace of mind, and in Seattle, closet organization can mean more time with family, more time for hobbies, and more time to enjoy what the city has to offer. You can organize your closets for maximum efficiency with just a little time and money.

Storage Systems

One of the easiest ways to organize your closet (after you clean it out, of course) is to purchase a ready-to-assemble storage system. These can be found at any home improvement store, and at many different price points. There are simple, covered wire models, particle board, and wooden models in a variety of attractive finishes. If you have the budget, choose a closet company. In Seattle, closet organization professionals can help you design the closet of your dreams.

Using Your Closet

But even the most attractive outfitted closet can be a mess if you don’t know how to organize it. Again, get rid of any clutter. Old toys, clothes you’ll never wear again, duplicate housewares and half-finished projects; decide which you really need, and get rid of the rest, preferable as charitable donations. Once that’s done, decide on a purpose for each of your closets. If it’s a linen closet, for example, don’t dump holiday decorations in there just because it’s handy. They might better fit a garage storage unit, as do sporting goods, work boots and fishing rods.

If your closet has drawers, shelves, or cabinet storage, purchase a few items to help you use them more efficiently. Rather than stuffing underclothing or socks in a drawer, use a divider (this can also be used for jewelry). Cloth bins and baskets placed on storage shelves can corral fabric, craft supplies, school papers, toys, and practically anything else you can think of. By giving each closet its own matching style of container, you make it attractive as well. If your closet lacks drawers or shelving, insert a dresser or bookcase for the same effect.

There are other storage solutions you might want to try. Over-the-door shoe pockets can be used for shoes—or dolls, stuffed animals, large toy vehicles, or art supplies. Over-the-door racks can hold suits, robes, or belts. Glue the lids of large-mouth jars to the underside of your shelves, and simply screw the jars on to provide storage for marbles, hardware, or sewing notions. Stackable drawers add more space. Clear drawers and bins let you see what’s inside, without having to dump them out—a plus for children!

Use your closets’ purpose and available space to come up with solutions that are right for your family. In Seattle, closet organization doesn’t need a remodel, just a little imagination!
